It’s never too early to start looking ahead to the next basketball season, right?
Michigan State should enter the season as one of the top teams in the Big Ten and a likely preseason top 25 team. So how do the Spartans stack up with the opponents on their 2024-25 schedule?
Michigan State will not release the official schedule for a few months, but we already know what to expect for a good chunk of the schedule. So let’s take a quick look ahead to the 2024-25 slate and what we know about the schedule as of right now:

Tom Izzo will return to the U.P. for an exhibition game against Northern Michigan at the Superior Dome. Izzo grew up in Michigan’s upper peninsula and played for Northern Michigan, so this exhibition trip up north will be a special one for the Spartans’ head coach the proud program he’s built.

Michigan State will make its sixth appearance in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational this season. The Spartans last played in the event in 2019, and have only won the tournament once before in 1991.
The bracket and schedule for this year’s event has yet to be released but here is the eight-team field: Auburn, Colorado, Dayton, Iowa State, Memphis, Michigan State, North Carolina and UConn. Michigan State will play three games in three days during the tournament.

Michigan State and Oakland will reportedly renew their annual rivalry again this season in a late December matchup. This matchup will take place at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Michigan State has never lost to Oakland, but the Golden Grizzlies have played the Spartans tight multiple times. This will be the third time these two teams have played this nonconference matchup at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Remaining Nonconference Schedule

The rest of the Spartans’ nonconference schedule is still unknown. Michigan State has three more games to fill out their out-of-league slate.
If we are speculating, though, we can assume Michigan State will add at least one other big-time opponent — especially with the Gavitt Games not renewed for this year. The other games most likely will be filled out with lower-tier foes.

The official Big Ten schedule has yet to be released, but earlier this week the league released the pairings and home/away splits for each team. Here’s a breakdown of how the Spartans’ conference schedule will eventually be constructed:

The Big Ten Tournament will have a new look to it in 2025 with the bracket changing to a 15-team field. Only the top 15 teams in the new 18-team Big Ten will get the opportunity to compete for the Big Ten’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The location of the Big Ten Tournament in 2025 has not been announced.
