Supermarket hailed 'best in the UK' by customers is the cheapest (2024)

Want to know where to get the best value for money when doing the weekly shop? According to the latest research, the answer is Aldi.

The beloved German chain has beat the competition in a monthly study by Which?, comparing the average price of a trolley full of popular groceries at eight of the UK’s biggest supermarkets.

Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose all feature in the consumer champion’s analysis, with 69 branded and own-brand items (such as Birds Eye Garden Peas, Heinz baked beans, Hovis bread, milk and butter) compared at each retailer.

But reigning supreme this time around was Aldi, where the selection of groceries cost £121.56 on average across the month of May.

It just pipped fellow budget supermarket Lidl to the post by a teeny tiny margin of £3.32, as the 69 basic products there totalled £124.88 on average.

However, Aldi is the prevailing champion when it comes to affordability, finishing on top for all five months of 2024 so far, as well as 11 out of 12 months of 2023.

The only time a shop has managed to beat its prices was when its rival Lidl was named the cheapest UK supermarket for October 2023.

Ele Clark, Which? retail editor commented: ‘Our latest monthly analysis has once again seen Aldi retain its title as the UK’s cheapest supermarket.

‘With food prices continuing to squeeze household budgets, it comes as no surprise that many people are choosing to shop with discounters, especially as shoppers could save a significant amount of money by doing so.

Shoppers often rave about its cheap prices at Aldi on social media, including customer @AdeeChambe37712 who tweeted: ‘@aldi if you still aren’t shopping here there is something wrong with you. Daughter walked in with a week’s pocket money – Got a big shop, firelighters and an electric hand drill!! Best supermarket in the UK easily.’

Another happy Aldi shopper, @0_H_I_h0e, shared: ‘I love Aldi. It’s small. It’s cute. It’s cheap. I have a space to pack my sh*t the way I want w/o ppl watching me. I’m embarrassed it took me this long to go. I’m hooked. Obsessed. Down bad for this adorable little grocery.’

How have the major supermarkets reacted to Aldi’s low prices?

Aldi is clearly the place to beat when it comes to bargains and the other supermarkets have not only realised how cheap it is, but are going out of their way to match the German brand’s prices.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s are adding more than 100 products each to their Aldi price match campaigns, which both originally launched more than three years ago.

Tesco claims to match Aldi’s prices on 756 of its products, which is around 130 more compared to the the start of the year, while Sainsbury’s does the same for678 products, about 110 more than at the turn of 2024.

Products price matched at both supermarkets include everyday buys such as fruit and veg, store cupboard essentials and even baby products.

Aldi also faces stiff competition from Asda and Morrisons, as both supermarket giants have launched their own Aldi (and Lidl) price matching campaigns.

Asda’s first got underway in January, and after initially covering 280 products, the number has now reached 405.

Morrisons then vowed in February to price match Aldi and Lidl on hundreds of common items – from cornflakes and mince, to bananas and baby wipes.

It remains to be seen how these new price matches will impact Aldi’s title as the UK cheapest supermarket for the rest of the year – although the contenders are certainly trying their best to knock it off top spot.
